The only problem is that for the novice learner the documentation reads like a dictionary. The main website for it is where you can download the latest versions or for Linux users it is probably in a software repository. Lilypond is an Open source program available for Linux, Macintosh and Windows and combined with various editors is used to 'engrave' the music and also produces midi files which I find helpful for practice. This guide was improved when I shared it with music students who found lilypond was a nice Open Source program that they could install and use outside of the classroom. The guide then contains sections on how to write in lilypond and encode music and generate sheet music and midi files. This guide contains a section on music notation which was very helpful to me since I knew only basic music notation and thinkgs like percussion clef was new to me.
